I sampled their Single Barrel Organic Rye Whiskey and White Rye Whiskey. Both being very fresh, White Rye a experimental dram. At first, Koval White Rye felt weird with solvent kind of scent and pointy taste gin-like. But when you let - [Bunnahabhain Darach Ur Batch 1 review](https://www.whiskyrant.com/bunnahabhain-darach-ur-batch-1-review/) - One or the other from THE ODD COUPLE Bunnahabhain Darach Ur is most definitely one of The Odd Couple, when it comes to whisky from Islay. The Darach Ur, which is Gaelic for New Oak, is there. But it is reasonably smooth. Overall, this un-peaty dram from Islay is a nice whisky. The oaky nose - [Highland Park Einar review](https://www.whiskyrant.com/highland-park-einar-review/) - Highland Park has released six NAS (no age statement) whiskies for their Warrior Series, made for European travel retail market: Svein, Einar, Harald, Sigurd, Ragnavald and Thorfinn (in order of price). The finish surely tames the peaty beast, but we are still talking about a very powerful dram. QUANTUM OF SOLACE with peat A big disappointment at first, Octomore Comus managed - [Teerenpeli Kaski Distiller's Choice review](https://www.whiskyrant.com/teerenpeli-kaski-distillers-choice/) - In Finnish, Kaski means burn-beaten land. In spite of the name, Teerenpeli Kaski Distiller's Choice isn't like something smoky from Islay. I guess it still is a soft version of something "swidden". I tried Teerenpeli Kaski at Grill & Distillery Taivaanranta's distillery tour. And I have to tell you, this might be the best positive - [Compass Box Hedonism Blended Grain review](https://www.whiskyrant.com/compass-box-hedonism-blended-grain-review/) - Compass Box Hedonism was first released in the year 2000, and it was the first of its kind – a blended grain whisky. Another innovation by the tireless innovators from Compass Box. Not quite so long ago, in 2013, Buffalo Trace was my first good encounter with bourbon. Somehow I had only tried American whiskey such as Jack Daniel's or Jim Beam, for example. It is not amazing, that I bumped into good bourbon. - [Ardbeg Ardbog review](https://www.whiskyrant.com/ardbeg-ardbog-review/) - Well, it's been two years since the tasting of this one but what the heck, better late than never with the reviews...Ardbog is a limited edition whisky by the Ardbeg distillery, famous for its peated whiskies from Islay. This dark and sweet character felt like a nice addition into the Elements of Islay series, even though I only had a chance to take few sips of it on our way to Taivaanranta distillery's Teerenpeli tasting in Finland. - [Knob Creek Straight Rye Whiskey review](https://www.whiskyrant.com/knob-creek-rye-whiskey-review/) - Knob Creek Straight Rye Whiskey was launched in the US in 2012. The new version of the 10 year old single malt whisky in - [Bowmore Small Batch review](https://www.whiskyrant.com/bowmore-small-batch-review/) - Bowmore Small Batch is matured in first and second fill ex-bourbon casks. Coming from Islay, it is surprisingly light all the way. Yes, there is some of that signature peat smoke buried on the back. But we're talking about wee hints of it. And even when talking about other things than peat, this Bowmore feels - [Port Charlotte The Peat Project review](https://www.whiskyrant.com/port-charlotte-peat-project-review/) - I didn't say HOLY SMOKE! Port Charlotte The Peat Project is a heavily peated (44ppm) single malt from Bruichladdich. This dram is a gentle one, when it comes to smoke. It surely has smoke but it isn't strong. Like the title suggests, this whisky is not as weird and complex, as the movie Holy Smoke. - [Edradour 2003 Ruby Port Matured review](https://www.whiskyrant.com/edradour-2003-ruby-port-matured-review/) - I got a chance to taste Batch 2 of the Edradour 2003 Ruby Port Cask Matured single malt from the smallest distillery in Scotland, located in Highland region. I was kinda excited because notes of strawberries had been stated in reviews. And of course, the pessimist that I am, I was feeling doubtful about it. - [Finlaggan Old Reserve review](https://www.whiskyrant.com/finlaggan-old-reserve-review/) - Finlaggan Old Reserve is another "bang for the buck whisky" for "peatheads" like me. It comes from Islay and is bottled by The Vintage Malt Whisky Company, but nothing else is being told about the whisky. Even the maturation is a guarded secret, but I'd guess it to be Ex-Bourbon casks. The mystery of Finlaggan - [Scallywag blended malt review](https://www.whiskyrant.com/scallywag-blended-malt-review/) - As a big fan of Big Peat, I had to try out Scallywag by Douglas Laing as soon as it was launched. Most of the whiskies in this small batch release come from Spanish Ex-Sherry butts, but there's also some - [Jack Daniel's Silver Select Single Barrel review](https://www.whiskyrant.com/jack-daniels-silver-select-review/) - Jack Daniel's Silver Select has big alcohol level but it is surprisingly subtle. To be honest, I didn't expect very much from it. Well, - [Jim Beam Rye review](https://www.whiskyrant.com/jim-beam-rye-review/) - A POCKET FULL OF RYE – nice start for my rye whisky experiences Jim Beam Rye was my first rye whiskey ever. And yes, GlenDronach is officially in the class of a - [The Irishman 70 review](https://www.whiskyrant.com/the-irishman-70-review/) - The Irishman brand is fairly new, established in 1999. What is cask strength whiskey? Cask strength is also known as barrel proof. It’s a dram coming straight out of the barrel or cask after (at least 3 years of) aging. Usually bottled whisky has to be diluted with water. This happens because whiskey producers want to bring its strength down to a level that makes it cheaper to produce and more palatable to majority of consumers. Typical strength for whiskey is 40% ABV (alcohol per volume level). Typically cask strength whiskies are in the range of 60–65% ABV. Sometimes bottlers might even dilute cask strength versions of their whiskey, to less than 60% ABV. - [Springbank](https://www.whiskyrant.com/category/campbeltown/springbank/) - Springbank distillery was founded in 1828 and is one of the last surviving producers of single malt whiskies in Campbeltown region. It is located on the southern Kintyre peninsula. Springbank distillery produces three distinct types of Scottish single malt whisky: Springbank is lightly peated, Hazelburn unpeated and distilled 3 times while Longrow is their heavily peated brand. Owned by J & A Mitchell & Company, who also owns the Glengyle distillery along with Cadenheads independent bottling company. Springbank is one of few distilleries performing each step of the whisky making process from on-site malting to bottling on their own. They have their own private bottling plant. And even though it’s labor intensive, Springbank turns their floor maltings by hand. Claiming that hand-turned floor maltings yield a malt that is better because it germinates more slowly. Opposed to pneumatic or machine-aerated commercial maltings. Springbank is actually the only fully self-sufficient distillery in Scotland. The distillery uses 3 stills to create a not quite the triple, but 2.8 time distillation. First wash distillation produces so-called “low wines”, which are around 20% ABV. The 2nd distillation produces an intermediate distillate, around 35% ABV. While the 3rd still is charged with a combination of 80% of their double-distillate and 20% of the “low wines”. This creates the 3rd distillation. So in their final spirit approximately 80% of the volume has been triple distilled, while around 20% has been double distilled. All of their bottlings are non-chill-filtered and contain no caramel coloring. The sourced water comes from the Crosshill Loch in the hills above the town. Springbank reduces its whisky to bottling strength on-site using the same Crosshill Loch water they used to produce the whisky. - [Glengyle (Kilkerran)](https://www.whiskyrant.com/category/campbeltown/glengyle-kilkerran/) - Located in Campbeltown region, Glengyle distillery was originally founded in 1872 and closed down in 1925.
